Project Based Learning The Three Billy Goats Gruff Way: PBL For Beginners

Welcome to this Project Based Learning, or PBL, teaching unit. This unit is designed for grades K, 1 and 2. Included in this unit is an explanation of project-based learning and a step-by-step guide on how to teach this project with rigor and authentic connections to the real-world. Note this unit contains some of the information found in my Three Little Pigs unit.

Through this unit, your students will publicize, practice, and perform their own Three Billy Goats Gruff plays complete with puppets or masks, props and scenery. Additional ideas are included to make this experience closer to a real-life stage experience or to even extend the unit into mathematics.

Your students will also add rigor in their writing. Ideas are included for journal writing as well as how to make their own books via the internet and hardbound books that will be family keepsakes. Students even connect to the real world as they write programs for their plays.

This unit is over 83 pages long and is packed with ideas, puppets, masks, props, scenery and how-to nuts and bolts. The unit is designed to be completed in two weeks, but may take longer depending upon student interests and abilities as well as the time that can be devoted to the unit. . I devoted 90 minutes a day for 10 days to teach this unit. This is a lot of time, but the skills, confidence and enjoyment my students demonstrated were well worth it. You may choose not to complete the entire unit. This is your choice. As it stands, this unit meets all of the criteria of a successful project- based unit.
