What educators are saying

This was fantastic! Brought out critical thinking skills, math and writing skills while remaining engaging throughout. We celebrated the end by visiting our local shelter and doing a writing and photo project!
Although I haven't used it yet, this material is awesome. I'm sure my students will love it when we use it.

Description

Your local community is going to open an animal shelter and they’ve asked for your students' assistance. These shelters play a crucial role in communities and many roles that go unnoticed but they're important for the welfare of the animal population. Now your students will get to run the show. There will be cats, dogs, and even some surprises. Are your students up to the challenge?

***THIS RESOURCE IS NOW DIGITAL for DISTANCE LEARNING***

See below for more details on using it with Google Slides.

The Animal Shelter is a project based learning activity that asks students to take control of a new animal shelter that the community is building. The student will help design the complex, create schedules, work with budgets on supplies needed, and so much more.

There are 18 activities (most are 1 page for each) for students to complete. Each page involves an issue or topic they must solve, design, create, or research.

As students work through each page, they will make their own decisions and choose the outcomes based on information they learn. By the end, all students will have completed the project, but each version will be based on the creator’s imagination, creativity, and knowledge base.

What's Included:

7 Introduction

Students are introduced to their objective of creating, organizing, and running an animal shelter.

9 Brainstorm

Students brainstorm everything they know about animal shelters.

10 Why An Animal Shelter

Students answer questions related to why animal shelters are important parts of the community.

11 Shelter Name

Students create a name, logo, and mission statement for the animal shelter.

12 Dedication

Students must dedicate the facility and write about who/what they chose and why.

13 For A Cause

Along with assisting the animal shelter, students will find a charity or cause they can assist (preferably one that assists with animals).

14 Shelter Position

The students will look at the needed jobs in the animal shelter and pick classmates to do them.

15 When the Animal Arrives

Students create a three-step process for taking in animals when they come into the shelter.

16 Just The Facts

Students must create a poster for dogs and cats that includes six interesting facts for each.

18 Responsible Adoptions

Students must create six adoption rules that are key for individuals who are taking pets home. These rules must apply to all animals.

19-22 Shelter Supplies

Students pick supplies and materials needed for the animal shelter. They have 200 credits to spend and cannot go over. They must discuss why they chose items and how they’ll be used.

-There are FOUR PARTS to the Shelter Supplies.

-Students will organize the supplies they bought, look at the data, and answer questions about their purchases. This includes graphing, separating data, and reflecting on choices.

23 Pet Profiles: Names

Students must name ten cats and ten dogs that are currently in the facility.

24 Pet Profiles Students create profiles for some of the animals that are currently up for adoption.

27 Walking The Dog bath

Students must create a schedule so all dogs get walked and get a bath on the same day without any overlapping. They will have to refer back to the dogs’ names.

28 Ultimate Cat House

Students design a cat house that must include six different sections.

29 Dog Run Students design an outside dog play-area and include at least six sections that must be labeled.

30 Taking A Flyer Students design two flyers that can be passed out around the community that inform the public about the shelter.

31 Shelter Design

Students will design the entire shelter complex. This will be an overhead view, like blue prints, and there are 12 items they must include. They can also create a map key. There is a second sheet added in case students want to create a larger shelter.

35 Adoptagram

Students show off the adoptions using the social media app, Adoptagram.

36 Problem Solver

Students are given situations that may occur at the shelter from bad weather to the need for supplies. They must write how they will solve them.

39 Reflection

Students use a rubric to self-assess themselves on how they did during the activity.

40 Extension

Included are a list of extension ideas to continue this PBL Activity.

What you need to get started:

1. Download Link for the Google Slide Product

4. Printer access to print out the finished product. (OPTIONAL).

Beginning your Google Slides Project:

Before you begin editing/filling in your project, it is VERY important to first make a copy of the file, on your own Google Drive.

After creating a copy of the resource you can decide which slides you would like to include and which ones to delete before you assign this as an assignment.

*********

-All pages can be geared towards multiple grade levels, although for some younger students the teacher may need to give more explicit instructions.

-Students may choose to use multiple resources to complete each page. They might even choose to work with a partner, but you get final say on that.

There are 32 printable pages. Hand them out one at a time or staple them all together at once. Choose whichever way works best in your classroom. I prefer back-to-back with staples on the side like a book.
