What educators are saying

My students loved working on this activity. They were engaged and enjoying the project. I will use this activity again.

Description

For this project based learning activity, students incorporate elements of geometry, measurement, and design to create an 18 inch by 24 inch symmetrical paper quilt.

Skills used:

  • Geometry - shapes, symmetry
  • Measurement - measuring 3 inch by 3 inch squares, measuring an 18 inch by 24 inch piece of poster board, area and perimeter
  • Design - students must arrange quilt squares to create an attractive design. They must decide whether to use whole squares or cut them into smaller squares, rectangles, or right triangles. They must also decide on colors and whether to use solid or patterned paper.

This resource includes:

  • teacher and student directions
  • quilt design ideas and examples
  • a design planning page
  • 8 response questions
  • a scoring rubric
  • photos of finished quilts

Know relative sizes of measurement units within one system of units including km, m, cm; kg, g; lb, oz.; l, ml; hr, min, sec. Within a single system of measurement, express measurements in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Record measurement equivalents in a two-column table. For example, know that 1 ft is 12 times as long as 1 in. Express the length of a 4 ft snake as 48 in. Generate a conversion table for feet and inches listing the number pairs (1, 12), (2, 24), (3, 36),...
Apply the area and perimeter formulas for rectangles in real world and mathematical problems. For example, find the width of a rectangular room given the area of the flooring and the length, by viewing the area formula as a multiplication equation with an unknown factor.
Recognize a line of symmetry for a two-dimensional figure as a line across the figure such that the figure can be folded along the line into matching parts. Identify line-symmetric figures and draw lines of symmetry.
