Project Based Learning Activity: Bats! .
This project integrates elements of research, animals, science, design, and planning as students learn about all about bats. At the end of this PBL students will design create a zoo exhibit on bats, applying information they learned about. There is also a class project for creating their own bat house (made from boxes).

There are 23 activities (most are 1 page each) for students to complete. Each page involves an issue or topic they must solve, design, create, or research.
Introduction:
Informational page where students find out more about the research and project they will create.
Brainstorm:
Students write what they already know about bats.
Vocabulary:
Students define bat-related vocabulary terms.
Micro vs. Mega:
Students use a Venn Diagram to compare and contrast the type main types of bats.
Specific Bat Research:
Students research 6 types of bats. There is an extra sheet for students to pick their own choice(s).
Body Feature:
Student identify, label, and color six parts of a bat.
Echolocation:
Students learn about echolocation and how it works.
Problems Bats Face and Their Importance:
Students research why bats are important and two main problems that they face in the world.
I Love the Night Life:
Students write a one-page story of a bat’s night out.
Worldly Bats:
Students research 4 locations around the world that have huge amounts of bats.
Baby Baby Hospital:
Students draw what they saw at a Bat Rehabilitation center.
Perspective:
Students draw three images upside down from the perspective of a bat.
The Parks:
Students write a one-page letter to a park about why they need to have bat houses.
Create a Bat Exhibit:
Checklist and overview for students to build an exhibit.
Details 1 & 2:
Students pick bats, rooms, and other details of the exhibit.
Bat Appetite:
Students create a menu of food for the bats they chose.
Program:
Student design and create a program filled with information for the exhibit.
Myth Busting:
Students create four mini-posters debunking bat myths.
BluePrints:
Students design the exhibit using blueprint and creating the front of the building.
Echolocation product:
Students create a product that uses echolocation, which will be sold in the gift shop.
Build a Bat House:
Step-by-step instructions (and a projectable for your class) to create a bat house using shoe boxes, cardboard boxes, and school supplies. Includes photos for each step. (These bat houses should not be used outdoors for housing real bats).
As students work through each page, they will make their own decisions and choose the outcomes based on information they learn. By the end, all students will have completed the project, but each version will be based on the creator’s imagination, creativity, and knowledge base.
All pages can be geared towards multiple grade levels, although for some younger students the teacher may need to give more explicit instructions.
Students may choose to use multiple resources to complete each page. They might even choose to work with a partner, but you get final say on that.

ACCESSING THIS DIGITAL RESOURCE
What you need to get started:
1. Download Link for the Google Slide Product
2. Have access to the Internet and a Google Account. (FREE)
3. Open the file on your own Google Drive and engage while in the edit mode.
4. Printer access to print out the finished product. (OPTIONAL).
Beginning your Google Slides Project:
Before you begin editing/filling in your project, it is VERY important to first make a copy of the file, on your own Google Drive.
Once you make a copy of the original file it will enable you to edit it and make any changes.
After creating a copy of the resource you can decide which slides you would like to include and which ones to delete before you assign this as an assignment.
