Description

Are you planning to teach problem and solution soon, but DON'T feel like finding and making all the materials you need for a strong lesson? This is PERFECT for you!!

This package has everything you need for a successful reading lesson on identifying problem and solution. I use it every year with my first grade class, although it can also be used for K or 2nd (or even as intervention for third!)

Here is what you'll get:

Flipchart:
*****IMPORTANT: You MUST have ActivInspire to open this flipchart. It was made using ActivInspire and will not open with any other program.
The flipchart begins with engagement activities where students identify the problem in a picture and brainstorm how it could be solved.
It then defines the words "problem" and "solution".
The next slide offers a link to a short Pixar video in which the students will watch and discuss what problem the characters faced and the solution they found.
The last part of the flipchart is having students read a short paragraph and identify the problem and solution after reading. ***This can also be done in partners- partner work is included if that fits your class instead.

Partner Work:
There is a PDF file in this package that can be printed and used for partners to complete together during the lesson. This part is also included in the flipchart, to allow you the opportunity to also review it as a class.
***If you choose not to use this in partners or in whole group, it can also be great to use in small group.

Assessment:
The assessment for this lesson is differentiated. There are 2 possible assessments you may use.
The first assessment would be best for younger kids or struggling students. It is basic and simple, asking the students to complete a sentence starter about the problem in the story and one for the solution. (As well as draw a picture).
The second assessment would be for your accelerated students. It asks for the title, characters, setting AND problem/solution in a story. There are no sentence starters.

Small Group Activity:
Also included in this package is a fun activity to use in small group. It is a problem/solution match. You can use it just to find the solution that matches the problem, or for your higher students, you can use it as a memory match game.

The ONLY thing missing from this lesson are the books that your students will read independently. That is for you to choose. There are so many great books you can read that have a clear problem and solution. This lesson has the flexibility to work seamlessly with whatever books or stories you choose.

I hope this product is useful to you as a teacher and helpful to your students. Thank you for purchasing. Happy teaching! :)
