Description
Primer Sight Word / Heart Word Books
How the Books Work: The main goal of the Heart Word Method is to teach students irregular high frequency words by decoding what can be sounded out, and using a heart to represent the irregular spelling pattern in the word, providing meaningful and engaging practice! These books also serve as a mastery tool for decodable sight word recognition and practice!
These 1 page books can be printed front to back with easy to follow instructions. Included in each book:
- Front Cover: Introduce the selected HFW. Identify sounds that students know and sounds that they will learn by “heart”. Students can color code the heart word or put a heart under the irregular sounds.
- Left Inside Page: Learn it! Irregularly spelled high frequency words need to be taught explicitly! The purpose of this initial page is for explicit instruction.
- Introduce the word and have students repeat it.
- Map the word. Students repeat the word aloud then place a manipulative into the each box for each sound in the word. In this example, there are 3 sounds: /d/, /ow/, /n/.
- Heart the “tricky” part(s) that needs to be learned by heart.
- Tap each sound and blend the word.
- Right Inside Page: Trace it: Students trace the word. Color coding can be implemented to identify the irregular or “tricky” parts.
Missing Sounds: Students use the given number of Elkonin Boxes to trace the letters and write any missing sounds in the blank boxes.
- Back Page: Write it! Students write the high frequency word 4 times each.
Find it! Student find the and color / cover the high frequency word.
