What educators are saying

This unit was absolutely amazing! I loved the scenarios. It really helped my students understand the different concepts.
What an incredible resource! The quality of this product is impressive and was so helpful, especially since we do not have a social studies curriculum at our school district. Thirty-four thoroughly written lesson plans and activities-just WOW! Thank you so much!

Description

This comprehensive unit is the perfect way to teach your kindergarten and first grade students all about citizenship. Everything is planned for you! Students learn about rights versus responsibilities, laws, the qualities of a good citizen and key vocabulary words.

Then, for the second part of the unit we transition into learning how to be a good citizen at school.

Social and emotional skills, school rules/expectations, behavior, making good choices and friendship skills are closely intertwined. This unit teaches students all of these skills so they can be good citizens at school and in their community.

--- WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THIS UNIT? ---

PART #1: CITIZENSHIP

Part one of this unit builds background information about laws, rights and responsibilities, geography and what it means to be a good citizen.

Lesson Outlines

I break this unit down into 34 lessons for you to follow.

You can follow my outline, or use these materials any way you wish!

Please note: scripted lessons are not included.

However, I do walk you through how I teach this unit on my BLOG POST HERE

Slideshow

Real life pictures and key vocabulary help students understand what it means to be a good citizen along with key vocabulary definitions.

Activity Pages

Students can fill out their graphic organizers that correlate with the slideshow. A cut and paste activity helps students determine good choices/bad choices citizens can make.

Good Citizen Craft Wheel

Three options are included!

10 Printable Posters

8.5"x11" posters describing the traits of a good citizen. In your printer settings, you can also print these posters four to a page to use as vocabulary cards.

What Are Laws?

Activity page that correlates with the slideshow and posters. Students draw and write four laws they know.

Rights vs. Responsibilities

We learn about the difference between these two words, and how they are related. Four activity pages are included.

Citizenship Journal

Included in the student journals are activity pages to learn, practice and write the Pledge of Allegiance. Students identify their country and state and write about how to be a good citizen.

I also prefer to add all other activities and writing prompts from this unit to their journal to keep their papers together in one spot.

PART #2: GOOD CITIZENSHIP AT SCHOOL

  • Part two of this unit teaches specific traits on how to be a good citizen at school.
  • Included are 20 lessons to teach these traits following the same format.
  • To see all 20 traits included in this unit, please click the green product preview button above.

Citizenship Story Slides

Show the slides to students and read the stories. Discuss what happened with students, and then a prompt asks them a question at the bottom fo each story slide. This is a great way to think and share.

Let's Dig Deeper!

After each story about a specific good citizen trait, the next slide goes more in depth with why this trait is important, and ways to put this new skill into action!

Writing Prompts

20 writing prompts are included for students to specifically state how and when they will implement each good citizen trait. Sentences starters are provided as well as a place to illustrate their goal.

Good Citizen Awards

When you see your students showing each specific good citizen trait, you can personalize an award for them! Both girl and boy versions are included for all 20 good citizen traits. This is a great way to focus on positive behavior and students implementing what they are learning.

Good Citizen Goal Chart

Both color and BW versions are included. When they receive an award for practicing good citizenship, students can color the corresponding star on their goal chart. Students love to watch their goal chart fill up with stars!

This charts comes in printable 8.5" x 11" as well as a large 16x20 poster format.

  • These ideas and activities can be a central theme that take you though the entire school year, and you’ll see a huge improvement with your students!

  • This unit teaches history, geography, social studies, SEL, behavior and so much more. Everything is planned for you and ready to teach!
