Description

This Presidents Day Unit Plan will allow you to have a week full of activities to cover social studies/history, English Language Arts, reading, and art in 3 complete lessons and a final assessment.

This unit lesson plan covers the questions:

What is a President in the United States and what do they do?

What is Presidents Day?

Who was George Washington?

Who was Abraham Lincoln?

What would I do if I were President of the United States?

SWBAT:

Students will be able to identify at least 3 jobs that the President of the United States does.

Students will be able to recognize George Washington and Abraham Lincoln and their character traits.

Students will be able to explain what the purpose of Presidents Day is as a national holiday.

CCSS (Standards)

History

K.1.2. Learn examples of honesty, courage, determination, individual responsibility, and patriotism in American and world history from stories and folklore.

K.6.1. Identify the purposes of, and the people and events honored in, commemorative holidays, including the human struggles that were the basis for the events (e.g., Thanksgiving, Independence Day, Washington’s and Lincoln’s Birthdays, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day).

K.6.2. Know the triumphs in American legends and historical accounts through the stories of such people as Pocahontas, George Washington, Booker T. Washington, Daniel Boone, and Benjamin Franklin.

Visual Arts

2.2 Demonstrate beginning skill in the use of tools and processes, such as the use of scissors, glue, and paper in creating a three-dimensional construction.

English Language Arts

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.K.3 With prompting and support, identify characters, settings, and major events in a story.

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.K.7 With prompting and support, describe the relationship between illustrations and the story in which they appear (e.g., what moment in a story an illustration depicts).

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.K.2 Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose informative/explanatory texts in which they name what they are writing about and supply some information about the topic.

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.K.1 Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about kindergarten topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups.
