Description

Looking for high quality grammar activities and worksheets that will reach your newcomer and beginner ELs? In this Present Tense Unit, every question, fill in, etc. on every page is accompanied by a visual/clipart. This is to build students’ vocabulary and allow to them to apply new grammatical skills in an authentic way that is comprehensible to them regardless of their language knowledge.

This ESL Grammar Unit includes anchor charts and target word wall cards for clear instruction of how to make the present tense, when to use it, and examples. Follow-up activities include matching, cut & paste, sorts, fill-ins, writing activities, and reading (a comic-strip style text using present tense in context). Take a look at the product preview for a closer look at each activity!

This unit comes in both a printable PDF or digital, interactive Google Slides™ version.

WHAT’S INCLUDED:

  • Anchor Charts/Posters: These full-page posters describe 1.) how to make the present tense, 2) when to use it, and 3) examples of common verbs in the present tense. All anchor charts use student friendly language and visuals.
  • Word Wall Cards: These word wall cards make it easy to display common examples of present tense verbs individually for students.
  • Flashcards: Similar to the word wall cards, each target verb comes with a card showing a visual that represents it. Students write the word on the back of the card in order to practice and study their words.
  • Lift-the-Flap Foldables: Students cut along the dotted lines to fold each side over the center images. Then, they write the target words on the outsides of the flaps.
  • Cut & Paste: Students and match the target words to their visual representation in this hands-on cut and glue activity.
  • Matching: Students match the target words and then sentences to an accompanying visual.
  • Fill-Ins: Students use a word bank to complete fill-in in the blank sentences.
  • Sort: Students sort cut-outs by the verb ending rule followed for He/She/It.
  • Sort & Write: Students take the above activity one step more by writing the verb form for I/You/We/They and He/She/It.
  • Let’s Write: Students circle the answer to a question and then write the answer in a sentence below.
  • Let’s Read: Students read a comic strip style text including the grammar skill. Then, they highlight where the present tense verbs are found in context.
  • Extend: Extra practice using new vocabulary

This unit is discounted, along with other important grammar skills, in the ESL Grammar Units Bundle! The Grammar Units Bundle is also included in the Beginner ESL Curriculum Megabundle!
