Description

Turn students into archeologists in this HANDS ON artifact identification activity as they review our prehistoric Indian past! Students will work cooperatively in teams to analyze a set of colorful artifact pictures “discovered” in a certain area of the country. Students must use inferencing skills, deductive reasoning, and text based evidence as they explore their “excavation” site, analyze their artifacts, and make a hypothesis as to the culture they most likely represent. Using the provided information packet on the key characteristics of early prehistoric groups (Paleo Indian, Archaic, Adena, Hopewell, Late Woodlands, Fort Ancient), students will compare their artifacts to make a prediction about the group their collection is most likely from. The included reflection activity will allow students to explain their thinking as they are actively participating in their “excavation”. Students love this engaging activity and you will love how the concepts come to life and solidify students’ overall understanding of our past!

Includes:

*6 colorful sets of excavation artifact collection cards

*2 page informational resource on Prehistoric Indian cultures

*team recording sheet

*individual reflection sheet (formative assessment)
