Description
Creating art is a universal trait that makes humans unique, and people have been creating art longer than they have been writing. Students love learning about Prehistoric Art because it gives them a chance to connect people who lived thousands of years ago in different places of the world. The Lascaux Cave is one of the most famous Paleolithic archaeology sites. Located in France, the Lascaux Cave is home to many murals of animals that students can identify.
The is a downloadable zip file with everything needed for a one class period activity. There is a 2 page PDF lesson plan that explains all the steps and connects the activities with the National Core Arts Standards. The “Prehistoric Art-Lascaux Cave” PowerPoint presentation includes 18 slides. 6 slides include very basic text about the Lascaux Cave in order to teach younger elementary students. The bulk of the lecture includes only photographs so students can share their own observations about the animals they see.
Anchor Standard: 7. Perceive and analyze artistic work
Lesson Objective: Students will be able to identify some of the oldest art as cave paintings.
Lesson Activity: Students will observe artwork from Lascaux Cave and make a drawing.

Time: 1 class
Since there is no preparation required, this activity can easily fit in with a social science or world history lesson on prehistoric times. This could also be left with a substitute for an enriching and meaningful stand-alone project.
