Learning Objective
Students will determine the meanings of words that contain the prefixes mis-, un-, re-, pre-, and dis-.
Description
Are you searching for a step-by-step PowerPoint that can be used to introduce common prefixes to your students in a way that will grab their attention? If so, this highly interactive PowerPoint may be exactly what you are looking for! After defining affix, prefix, and suffix, students learn the meaning of the five most common prefixes: un-, dis-, re-, pre-, and mis-. Then, there are more than 20 practice slides where students must identify a prefixed word in the sentence and the meaning of the prefix.
PowerPoints filled with visuals are ideal for teaching new content to students because PowerPoints tend to be highly engaging and concepts can be easily broken down into understandable chunks of information. But let's face it... they are so time-consuming to create! Fortunately, now you have an option of using one that is already complete, kid-tested, and ready to go for you!
I choose to begin with these five prefixes because they account for 53% of all English prefixed words, according to Word Frequency Book (Carroll, Davies, Richman, 1971).
HERE'S THE SEQUENCE OF TOPICS COVERED IN THIS POWERPOINT:
Slides 1-8: Introduction

- includes an explanation of why the root word is "fix and how it's related to the meaning of the words!!
- includes a mnemonic device for remembering that a prefix comes at the beginning and the suffix comes at the end!!

Slides 17-19: The meanings of dis-
