Description
When we start learning prefixes and suffixes, one of the first things my students always ask is, “Is there a trick or easy way to remember what each prefix and suffix means?” I always tell them, “No, but we’ll do a lot of practice activities to help you learn the most common prefixes and suffixes.” That doesn’t make them happy, but it does help them feel better.
These two-piece puzzles have the seventeen most common prefixes and nineteen most common suffixes in English, along with their meanings. The left piece has the prefix or suffix, and the right piece notes the meaning. I prefer to use them as a partner activity or as a center activity.
To prepare the puzzles, print them on cardstock, laminate them, and then cut them out. The puzzles are designed in black and white to allow for printing on a copy machine. I highly recommend printing each set on a different color of cardstock. This makes returning pieces found on the floor, under books, and in other locations to the correct set much easier.
Place the pieces in a large envelope, bag, or other container. Then, place the container in your center or give one to each set of students. The students put the puzzles together. There is a recording sheet included for students to write their answers on if you prefer.
