In this lesson, students make connections between multiplying by 10 and their first introduction to exponents. The lesson begins by introducing the meaning of an exponent and examples. Then students practice using patterns with powers of 10 in exponential form, standard form, and expanded form. This lesson gives students a strong foundation for multiplying and dividing by powers of 10 and scientific notation in later grades.

The lesson includes many practice problems for students to complete with a teachers, partner, or independently depending on their ability. The practice problems could also be used for homework or a quiz grade.

A lesson reflection is included so teachers can collect, record, and analyze student's understanding of the lesson.
