    Description

This Power and Corruption Thematic Literary Unit Bundle provides everything you need to do a thematic study of literature for your high school ELA course. I use this unit in my Honors English 10 class, but it can be used in any core or Pre-AP® class for 9-12 ELA. Studying literature in a thematic unit keeps students engaged and offers a variety of examples and voices for students to examine the selected theme. In this thematic unit, students will study power and corruption, with the opportunity to analyze, discuss, and write about a variety of texts and selections.

What's Included in this Power and Corruption Thematic Literary Unit Bundle for High School ELA:

This resource includes a variety of formative assessments, including graphic organizers, graded discussions, worksheets, paragraph writing, and a mock trial. The summative assessments include a curation project, which emphasizes critical thinking and analytical writing, as well as a text-based test. Text-based tests emphasize close reading and prepare students for standardized test questions in their future.

The following texts and selections are covered in this bundle:

    • "Lather and Nothing Else" by Hernando Tellez (short story)
    • "Harrison Bergeron" by Kurt Vonnegut (short story)
    • 2081 (short film, based on "Harrison Bergeron")
    • "Time Capsule Found on the Deserted Planet" by Margaret Atwood (poem)
    • "Wealthy Teen Nearly Experiences Consequences" (Onion article)
    • “Here’s How Winning the Lottery Makes You Miserable” by Melissa Chan (news article)
    • “Eight White Sox are Indicted” by the New York Tribune (vintage news article)
    • "Epitaph on a Tyrant" by W. H. Auden (poem)
    • Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare (excerpt of play)
    • Animal Farm by George Orwell (anchor text)

Materials for Animal Farm include introductory notes, materials for studying both the play and the film, and two versions of quizzes.
