Whether it’s the characters, the Australian animals, or the illustrations, these 9 diverse printables, complemented by 4 bookmarks, supplement the book beautifully.

Designed to align with key themes of the story and the author's craft, these activities immerse students in a range of learning experiences:

  1. Retell: Engage students in story retelling using puppets to act out key scenes and events from the narrative.
  2. Story theme: Magic – Encourage exploration of the magical elements in the story by engaging students in activities where they can cast 'magic' on animals.
  3. Figurative language – Facilitate analysis of figurative language used in the story to deepen their understanding of the text.
  4. Australian map – Enhance geographical awareness by having students locate cities Hush visited on a map of Australia. Provide additional support with a version featuring beginning letters on the map.
  5. Food nouns – Students match foods featured in the story with their corresponding names.
  6. Animal nouns – Students match animals mentioned in the story with their names.
  7. Rhyme – Students match rhyming words from the story.
  8. Making connections – Students write a postcard from one of the story's settings, encouraging them to make personal connections to the narrative and express their thoughts and ideas. Provide additional support with a version that includes sentence starters.
  9. Going further: Invisible exploration – Students consider the concept of invisibility and speculate on what they would do.
