What educators are saying

We did this together as a class so I could help guide the discussions. The kids found it to be enjoyable. I plan to use again in future years.
Excellent and engaging! It was fun for my students. Make sure to try it out first to get an idea of how it will flow. I adjusted the PowerPoint to make it a little easier to use for myself (personal preference)

Description

This game allows students to take on the role of a farmer during the late 1800's in the United States to understand the difficulties they faced. Students will be able to connect their learning to the Populist Movement and how farmers were able to impact government policy and the election of 1896. After the game students will listen and take notes over a brief powerpoint that discusses the topics of:

  • Overproduction of farmers
  • Creation and purpose of the National Grange
  • Interstate Commerce Act of 1887
  • Creation and platform of the Populist Party
  • Election of 1896
  • William Jennings Bryan and the "Cross of Gold Speech"

Included in this lesson:

  • Populism Game powerpoint slide with instructions for the teacher embedded in the speaker notes (27 slides)
  • Introduction to Progressivism and lecture powerpoint slide over the Populist Movement (6 slides)
  • Student handout to keep track of decisions, crops, and money throughout the game
  • Student question sheet over the powerpoint lecture notes

It is important to note that this lesson was used in a high school eleventh grade US History class that was compromised of only ESL/ELL students.
