What educators are saying

This is a great resource for the last few days before break! It is pretty challenging, so be prepared to give lots of hints!
We did this to end our Polar Express Unit! I used it with 2nd Grade and we did it together because they needed a little extra support. They loved it!

Description

Are you looking for a completely paperless and totally engaging activity before winter break? This Polar Express Escape Room will take your students on a great adventure as they answer questions about the book and complete challenges to unlock digital codes.

They will need to hurry! The train is boarding and they've lost their ticket. Can they work hard to find their ticket and make it home before Christmas? Let's find out!!

If you are familiar with Breakout EDU, this is a digital escape room that is completely PAPERLESS!

4 things to love about this Google Form Escape Room:

1. NO-PREP! There is nothing to print, cut, laminate, clues to hide, or locks to set. Everything is ready for your students right in the form! They DON'T have to have two different tabs open with a site/form/etc.

2. This digital escape room can be used with computers, chrome books, OR iPads. Students only need one device per group/pair!

3. **NEW: If this is your first experience with Google Forms or an escape room, you'll love that your purchase includes a link to an 8 minute Youtube video of ME answering any questions you may have and walking you through the whole escape room!!

3. Students do NOT need a google login. You can assign the escape room via Google Classroom, SeeSaw or any other similar class site your students access, OR there is a QR code provided for your students to access it on their devices.

Students reflect on the book and use reading comprehension skills, as well as critical thinking skills to solve the puzzles and unlock the codes. There are clues to help them unlock each section of the Google Form to try to find the Polar Express ticket they lost. Once they successfully find their ticket and are able to board the train, they will see a fun congratulations message!

If you're worried your students will run out of time and you want to continue another class period, just have them keep track of their codes/answers on a piece of paper. There is not a way to save progress in the form, but your kids can re-type those codes in the next day before continuing where they left off.

What is included in this unique POLAR EXPRESS DIGITAL ESCAPE ROOM for students:

Questions cover:

-Similes/Metaphors (fun video and info slide included in the form to help them if you haven't taught this skill yet)

-Onomatopoeia

-Rhyming words

-Context Clues

-Finding evidence

-ABC order

-reading comprehension

Note: This is not an editable form. Unlike other quizzes or surveys your students may have taken in Google Forms, students MUST get the answer correct before advancing to the next question and section. All results are the same because of the answer validation function in the escape room! Students do NOT need a Google account and student names are not collected. If students “breakout” or “escape”, they not only finished each section but got every answer correct because students CANNOT advance to the next section without the exact answer.

Please make sure your district does not have Google Forms blocked as no refunds will be given because of this. Thanks for understanding. You do not need Google logins, but you will need access to Google Forms with the provided link.

This was designed for students to work in groups, but it can definitely work with distance learning as a fun activity if you provide supports!

Here are a few tips for using it in distance learning:

Depending on your grade and student abilities, I recommend:

1. Emailing parents the answer key to help if their child gets stuck since you aren't there in person to provide hints if needed. This would help avoid any frustrations since they aren't able to collaborate as a group as it's designed.

2. Encourage students to do the activity when you have live 'office hours' or a live Google Meet to answer questions in Google Classroom or your classroom share tool. Remember this is a fun breakout activity, and not an assignment you would take a grade for so this should relieve any pressure on families!! Please make sure this is clear.

3. Some of you have told me that you've done this as a class together in a Zoom or Google Meet. I love hearing this! Many of you have utilized breakout groups for this so students can still work together and it has been successful!

4. If you want to know they participated, have them take a screenshot of their screen or share their screen with you like they would in the classroom. If they didn't have time to make it to the end to breakout, they can just take a screenshot of where they ended when the time was up! Then you can go over the breakout together as a class!
