Description

Poetry, parts of speech, the poet's craft...this lesson has it all! Students will imagine a special place and use parts of speech to create a poem about it. Three different activities guide students through the poetry writing process. Graphic organizers help students organize their thoughts and prepare to write.

This lesson is made up of three activities that result in a culminating activity where they create and publish their poems. These activities can be completed in one session or over the course of two or three class periods.

Students move from whole group to small group to independent work, offering a variety of experiences in poetry and instruction, keeping engagement high.

Each low-prep activity comes with teacher instructions, step-by-step classroom procedures, and a checklist for any prep needed.

MORE ABOUT THE ACTIVITIES:

Activity 1: Imagining a Special Place- Whole Group

In this activity, students will imagine their favorite place. After they have decided on one, they will
discuss and reason how to categorize their places into different categories.

Activity 2: Using Nouns and Adjectives to Describe the Special Place - Partner/Small Group
In this activity, students will think about nouns they would find at the chosen special place from Activity#1. Then they will write adjectives to describe each place.

Activity 3: Publish an Adjective-Noun Poem- Independent

The culminating activity will be a published poem using an adjective-noun pattern. Students will practice fluency by trying out different ways to read the poem to provide poet’s craft and mood.

⭐⭐WILLIAMS' MODEL OF CREATIVITY ⭐
This lesson is based on Williams' Model of Creativity, a model designed to develop the traits of creativity in students. This particular resource focuses on these traits:

☀️ Fluency - the ability to generate a lot of ideas
☀️ Elaboration - the ability to expand upon ideas
☀️ Originality - the ability to come up with unique ideas that differ from the norm

☀️ Imagination - the ability to build mental pictures and visualize possibilities

In addition to addressing standards and providing an engaging and effective classroom experience, these activities will also build students' creativity skills.

Frequently Asked Questions:

1. How do I know how to lead the discussion and give students good direct instruction? I give you every single word! The teacher instructions are super thorough. You'll feel so confident in guiding your students through the activities and creating their poems!

2. The rubric looks a little different from what I'm used to. Is that a problem? You'll love the rubric! It shows students exactly what a great effort looks like, it includes creativity in the rubric (yep!), and has space for the students to respond to your feedback about their poems.

3. It says grades 2 - 3. Can I use this with my fourth graders (or first graders)? ELAR is particularly flexible as a content area as far as grade levels are concerned. This could definitely be used for first grade with support and fourth grade as well. For first grade, you'll need to do more of the work orally but that would work just fine.

4. I've never heard of the Williams' Model before. Is that a problem? Nope! These lessons are designed to be plug-and-play. I've done all the Williams' work for you (choosing traits to develop and strategies to use). All you need to do is use the activities. The activities will do the rest!
