Description
Students learn from the greats by reading mentor text poems and writing their own using templates!
Hook students into poetry by making it seem as easy as fill-in-the-blank! Great for any British Literature class or regular English Language Arts, these editable template pages use a side-by-side layout so that students can read the original and quickly begin making their own (serious or silly) versions of the poem. The blank spaces force students to think carefully about grammar, rhyme, alliteration, and syllables so that the poem still “sounds like” the mentor text.
(See the PREVIEW for an example template!)
Each ready-to-print page includes part or all of the original poem, a question for reading comprehension, a fill-in “mad lib” style template, and a “challenge” option for any student who might find the mad lib template too easy. (The directions page also includes extra credit opportunities and more “challenge” requirements.) Use the reading question to launch discussion, or even as a formative assessment.
Grading is easy with a simple one-row, 5-column rubric of CCSS standard W.10.
This 6-page download includes:
• A Directions page, including “basic” and “challenge” requirements and a CCSS rubric to assess W.10 (writing for a variety of time lengths, tasks, and purposes).
• Five Texts and Templates:
o William Shakespeare: “Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?”
o Elizabeth Barrett Browning: “How do I love thee?”
o William Ernest Henley: “Invictus”
o Dylan Thomas: “Do not go gentle into that good night”
o John Keats: “When I have fears that I may cease to be”
