Activity #1: Devices in Pop Songs
The first activity is a Google Slideshow that has students looking for specific devices in specific famous songs. Unfortunately, I could not include the song lyrics or an answer key for this activity because of copyright infringement. So, students will need to Google to find the lyrics and then respond to the prompts to find examples of each poetic device and then explain how that device communicates the message of the song.
Feel free to add any additional devices to this activity as you see fit. Once you make a copy of the Google Slideshow, it will be editable for your use. You can opt to have students complete this in groups, or use the activity as warm-ups at the beginning of class.
Activity #2: Digital Blackout Poem Using Pop Song Lyrics
The second activity is a digital blackout poem in which students will select the lyrics of a song to create a blackout poem using Google Slides. Students will then explain the message of their new, poetic creations along with the devices they use in their poems.
Activity #3: Song Lyric Poetry Slam
The third activity is a song lyric poetry slam in which students will select the lyrics of a song to recite / perform for the class. These slam poetry sessions are always great fun. You may want to offer this activity as extra credit and take volunteers or have students participate in pairs or small groups. If you have any student musicians, I also allow them to perform the song if they so choose. Students will prepare for the poetry slam by selecting a song, reducing it down to 10-20 lines, and then practicing how they will recite it to the class.
Activity #4: Check for Understanding Quiz
The fourth activity included here is a super simple quiz to check for understanding of key poetic devices.
I hope you find something in here that works for you and your students! Pop songs are a great way to engage students in poetry using the songs they love!
