What educators are saying

I used this as a quiz in my 5th grade math class. The students thought it was a fun way to test their knowledge.
Students completely engaged in this activity and asked for more. A great way to teach coordinate geometry .

Description

This Secret Code Busters - Coordinate Grid Game is a unique & engaging way to practice plotting points in quadrant 1 of the coordinate plane. Master graphing ordered pairs with this no-prep coordinate plane activity! Perfect for math intervention or math centers!

As one teacher said: "My students had so much fun they forgot they were doing math!"

What's included?

✔Teacher Directions

✔First Quadrant Coordinate Grid with Secret Code

✔Whole Group Coding Activity

✔Partner/Small Group Coding Activity

This activity is perfect for:

  • Whole group instruction
  • Small group intervention
  • Take-home activity
  • Math centers

How it works?

In this game, each point on the coordinate plane corresponds with a letter in the alphabet. Students use the letters to read and create secret codes. For example- (9, 2) might correspond with the letter H on the graph.

After a whole group activity that shows students how the alphabet coding system works, students get into partners and write secret codes for each other using the ordered pairs from the graph. Then they trade papers and see what each secret message says. The activity allows for this partner activity to be completed four different times.

I've tried lots of different ways for my students to practice plotting and naming points- battleship, creating secret pictures, etc. This BY FAR was the activity that got them the most fired up and excited!

Use a pair of perpendicular number lines, called axes, to define a coordinate system, with the intersection of the lines (the origin) arranged to coincide with the 0 on each line and a given point in the plane located by using an ordered pair of numbers, called its coordinates. Understand that the first number indicates how far to travel from the origin in the direction of one axis, and the second number indicates how far to travel in the direction of the second axis, with the convention that the names of the two axes and the coordinates correspond (e.g., 𝘹-axis and 𝘹-coordinate, 𝘺-axis and 𝘺-coordinate).
Represent real world and mathematical problems by graphing points in the first quadrant of the coordinate plane, and interpret coordinate values of points in the context of the situation.
