Description

This Math Activ Studio flipchart teaches students to identify, describe, and compare plane shapes (triangles, rectangles, squares, and circles) and to find plane shapes in the environment. This lesson is aligned with the Houghton Mifflin Math Series, 7.2 - 1st grade. This lesson begins with the "Problem of the Day" in which students are to apply critical thinking to solve the daily word problem (marbles in a bag). Next, the flipchart displays the daily objective, then reviews vocabulary terms needed to understand the content of the lesson: side, corner, square, circle, rectangle, and triangle, with definitions of the words and pictures of the shapes. The next page extends upon the vocabulary in which the shapes are displayed and labeled in sides and corners - higher order thinking questions are included in this slide for teachers to ask the students. Next, the students are given a scenario in which a group of kids need certain shapes for a project and they must match the word to the shape. The next page is another matching activity, but with sides. Next, is a "showdown" activity in which the teacher pulls down the black screen one word at a time. For example, the teacher would instruct students to take out their marker boards (or paper) and then pull down the screen to reveal the word "triangle" and the teacher would give the students a specific amount of time to draw a triangle until calling out "showdown" in which students would hold up their drawings. The teacher would repeat this for the next 3 vocabulary words, only displaying one at a time (so students can come up with the shape on the spot, in a game fashion. Next is a partner activity "Test Your Friend" in which students would pick a shape on the slide and test their friend on the name of the shape, how many sides/corners it has, etc.fference of zero or subtracting zero using the visual manipulatives on the flipchart. The students are then given a list of guided and individual work to complete (aligned with the textbook directions). Then a review and closure question is given on rectangle, along with the opportunity think critically as the teacher gives a description of the shape she is thinking and the students must provide her with that shape. Last, students are given a math journal entry allowing students to use words and pictures to show whether a square, rectangle, circle or triangle has the same number of sides and corners.
