Description

All parents want to help their child be successful but many struggle helping their child with math. This Place Value & Rounding Parent Study Guide is aligned with Common Core and the Virginia SOLs. This study guide is specifically designed for parents and teaches skills, vocabulary, and strategies they need to know to help their child with place value, rounding, and ordering numbers. Skills covered:

  • reading, writing, and identifying numbers in standard, written, and expanded form
  • ordering numbers from greatest to least and least to greatest
  • rounding whole numbers and decimals

Two versions of the Place Value & Rounding Parent Study Guide are included. The first version teaches the millions place through the thousandths place. The second version teaches the hundred millions place through the thousandths place.

Send this study guide home at the beginning of your place value and rounding unit. It will assist parents as they help their child with homework and help them study for a test.

Recognize that in a multi-digit whole number, a digit in one place represents ten times what it represents in the place to its right. For example, recognize that 700 ÷ 70 = 10 by applying concepts of place value and division.
Use place value understanding to round multi-digit whole numbers to any place.
Recognize that in a multi-digit number, a digit in one place represents 10 times as much as it represents in the place to its right and 1/10 of what it represents in the place to its left.
Explain patterns in the number of zeros of the product when multiplying a number by powers of 10, and explain patterns in the placement of the decimal point when a decimal is multiplied or divided by a power of 10. Use whole-number exponents to denote powers of 10.
Read, write, and compare decimals to thousandths.
