Description
In this mini-unit on the Pilgrims, Puritans, and the 13 Colonies, you receive FOUR resources to teach the Puritans, Pilgrims, the Mayflower Compact, and life in New England.
✯ ✯ This resource is included in my 13 Colonies Unit located here! ✯ ✯
1.) A Powerpoint: “Who are the Pilgrims and the founding of the Plymouth Colony?” It covers only the essentials and teaches students who this group is, what their situation is in England (and Holland), where they originally wanted to land, and what the differences between a Separatist and a Puritan.
2.) “The Puritan Faith Reading” - This document was created to help students prepare for the year-end multiple-choice tests. Students are given a brief reading sample about what Puritanism is like - then are given 4 multiple choice questions to gauge their understanding. A great resource for teaching students what children (and adults) could expect to experience under the Puritan faith.
3.) “Puritan Religion Mini DBQ” - This document was compiled to show, specifically, the rigid structure of Puritanism. Students will read over 4 quotes (all from Pilgrim times) to understand what Puritan life valued. This lesson can especially be useful is one were to teach about the Salem Witch Trials next - by examining the religion of these people here it can easily be paralleled there.
4.) “Mayflower Compact.” - Students can read individually or in groups to analyze this powerful and essential primary source. Students will be given the document in its entirety (although the document is very short) and are asked to answer 5 discussion questions that get to heart of the document’s goal. I often times will include dictionaries with the groups since there can be some difficult language!
