Description

Students evaluate and graph piecewise defined functions, and determine the equations for them from a given graph. There are no trigonometric or exponential functions.

Activity Based Learning with Task Cards really does work to help reinforce your lessons. Task and station cards get your students engaged and keep them motivated. Use all at once or as many as you like. Directions for using Task Cards included in this resource.

Included:

  • 24 Task Cards which are numerically and also color coded.

#1 – 8 Evaluate a piecewise defined functions

# 9 – 16 Graph piecewise defined functions with two conditions

#17- 20 Graph piecewise defined functions with three conditions

#21 – 24 Determine the equation from the graph of a piecewise defined functions

  • Same questions in worksheet format
  • Student response sheets with room for students to show their work and blank graphs with best windows for each problem.
  • 2 Handouts with similar problems which can be used as an assessment, HW, or enrichment.
  • All answer keys

There are multiple ways to use these task cards in your classroom. Students can work alone, randomly pair up, or work in small groups. When students work in pairs or small groups, give as many task cards as there are students. This way they can help each other, work together, and each student has a task. After a few minutes, depending upon the difficulty level and your experience, each group passes their cards to the next group. You may also set up math centers or stations with these cards.

Represent constraints by equations or inequalities, and by systems of equations and/or inequalities, and interpret solutions as viable or non-viable options in a modeling context. For example, represent inequalities describing nutritional and cost constraints on combinations of different foods.
Understand that a function from one set (called the domain) to another set (called the range) assigns to each element of the domain exactly one element of the range. If 𝘧 is a function and 𝘹 is an element of its domain, then 𝘧(𝘹) denotes the output of 𝘧 corresponding to the input 𝘹. The graph of 𝘧 is the graph of the equation 𝘺 = 𝘧(𝘹).
Use function notation, evaluate functions for inputs in their domains, and interpret statements that use function notation in terms of a context.
Graph square root, cube root, and piecewise-defined functions, including step functions and absolute value functions.
