What educators are saying

There were so many great items in this bundle. We used them for the full Pi experience. The kids enjoyed drawing, coloring, and cutting out parts to make their crowns. The items had great levels that would be useful across a few grade levels.

    PACKAGING ENGINEER STEM

Students will be packaging engineers for the day as they determine the best arrangement for a set of circles in the various packages! This 2D STEM challenge is a scaled-down, paper version of what real packaging engineers must accomplish with 3D objects and products. This activity ties in well to Pi Day because the objects are all circles! In a 3D version, these objects could be something like batteries, soup cans, straws, etc.

    What You'll Get

    • Teacher instructions and background information - vocabulary includes pi, area, tangent, radius, cross section, packing density
    • Printable and digital STEM activity both elementary and secondary versions are included - elementary version has students calculate a point value for their arrangement, while the secondary version has students calculate packing density. All formulas are provided, including a reminder of how to find the area of the shapes included. Note: if you are working on mastering the use of a compass, you may opt to have students scribe their own circles.
    • Guided recording sheets for students to record their results
    • Background page on Packaging Engineering and discussion questions
    • Printable circles - these are the "products" students need to package
    • Printable "packages" - students need to determine the best package for the products

    TECH INTEGRATED ART WITH CIRCLES

What You'll Get : 3 Options to learn about famous works of art...through circles!

    Option 1: Print and Go!

If you don't have time to work through the lesson with your students or would prefer to just color in the pages, this is the option for you. Six pages are provided which are my own interpretation of famous paintings by Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Cezanne, Claude Monet, Edvard Munch, Johannes Vermeer, and Gilbert Stuart.

    Option 2: Some technology

Editable files are included if you would like to modify them in any way. Make copies of the files and your students can digitally edit them - add more circles, remove circles, add color/shade, etc. This is a great way to access the technology without starting from a blank canvas.

Option 3: Create new circle art

A 20-page instruction manual is included for creating new circle art using Inkscape (a free and open source program, please check compatibility with your devices to make sure you can use this software or something similar (see suggestions above). The guide gives step-by-step instructions with screen shots so that you or your students can take any picture and create circle art from it. Once you have gone through the process, it is very straightforward.

The artwork I have chosen to transform is all in the public domain (due to each country's law based on the year of the artist's death), however for your own personal use you could choose more modern art or even photographs the students have taken themselves. A follow up page is also included (UK English version included for follow up page only).

PI DAY DOODLES THINK AND INK

    What You'll Get

Pi Think and Ink! Introduce the concept of pi with an interactive activity. This is perfect if you like incorporating doodling, drawing, or coloring into your math lessons.

This is also the ideal activity if you don't have a lot of time to allocate to Pi Day but still wanted to recognize it in some way. There are several options to choose from so that you can pick from either a more open-ended activity or one that is more defined. Want to go digital? You can complete this fun pi activity either on paper, digitally, or both ways!

Because each student is completing the page their own way, they will end up with something totally unique. As you only need one page per student, you also won't have a lot of copying to do. While this activity is very interactive, there is not cutting, gluing, and no paper scraps. For the digital portion, your students can use their creative side to make a fun tribute to pi!
