Description

Newton's laws of motion focus on how forces interact in our world and physics definitely plays a part in every sport. Many students enjoy playing sports and understand that injuries can happen. And sometimes forces can cause harmful impacts resulting in concussions. Peak your students scientific interest as concussions are a topic being discussed more frequently. This sports concussion essay project/assessment allows for student choice by selecting their sports topic and includes two scaffolded levels to align with your student's writing skills. Each scaffolded essay level has 10 pages of instructions, resource links, essay structure and rubric (10 pages x 2 levels). This lesson is intended to be a major assessment as a cumulative project at the end of a physics unit, or after teaching Newton's laws of motion and how they apply to sports and the human body. Great lesson that integrates laws of motion with real life activities of students to reinforce learning.

Objective:  Students will write a persuasive essay using critical thinking and scientific evidence to back their claim. The CER scientific process is used to help students demonstrate their knowledge of Newton’s laws of motion as they are applied to sports and the human body.

Science Standards: TEKS: 8.6C investigate and describe applications of Newton's three laws of motion such as in vehicle restraints, sports activities, amusement park rides, Earth's tectonic activities, and rocket launches.

ATL/SEL Skills:  For most lessons I include what are known as “Approaches to Learning” skills (ATL). These are more commonly known as SEL or social and emotional skills. ATL Skill: Research - Information literacy - Access information to be informed and inform others and Make connections between various sources of information.

Assessment tools:  This lesson is intended to be a major assessment as a cumulative project at the end of an a physics unit, or after teaching Newton's laws of motion. CER style essay with task specific rubric for MYP year 3 sciences, Criterion D - Reflecting on the Impact of Science, is included.

Lesson Structure and Teacher Tips:  There are two levels of essay instructions.

  • Level 1 is more scaffolded for students who struggle with writing, especially with academic writing in content areas.
  • Level 2 is less scaffolded and is designed for the more independent student who has stronger writing skills.
