Description
Are you looking for a lesson that brings real-life science scenarios to your students as they study chemical and physical changes? This activity will have students pretend they are detectives trying to solve crimes in a town to decide how matter is changing. Then, using the reference sheet available, students will make a claim and provide evidence as they identify physical and chemical changes.
Students will:
- Identify whether the twelve given scenarios are chemical or physical changes.
- Support their claim with evidence.
This changes in matter lesson includes:
- Sneak peek into My Classroom: An explanation of how this was organized in my classroom.
- How to Use Sheets: Detailing how to access and distribute the digital version of this resource, directions to use with Google Classroom, instructions to access and use the editable task cards.
- Student Reference Sheet: Distribute this sheet to each group or individual student to review the characteristics of a chemical and physical change.
- Printable Task Card Scenarios: Come in color and black and white. There are 12 scenarios in total.
- Printable Answer Sheet: Students will record their answers here. They will note which type of change occurred, back it up with evidence, and identify if the case is closed or not.
- Editable Task Cards: Choose to use the 12 scenarios included or create your own to tailor this activity to your unique classroom needs.
- Digital Activity: Prepare for a remote or distance learning environment. This allows you to differentiate instruction based on personal learning style or save paper for extra engagement. (Yes, this can be posted in your learning management system such as Schoology or Google Classroom)
