Description
This Physical Science Career Research and T Shirt Design Project is a great way to get your students thinking about potential careers in the sciences, or just to help them to understand why their studies in chemistry, physics, and the physical sciences are relevant and important! This project works for grade 6 and up, so if you are teaching a middle school Physical Science course or unit or a high school Chemistry, Physics, or Physical Science course, you can assign this project at the beginning of the year to get everyone thinking about the application of the course/unit objectives in the real world, in the middle of the course to break things up and allow the students to get creative, or at the end of the course/unit as a wrap-up activity!
I have included a long list of over 130 careers under the umbrella of physical science. However, you or your students may think of more! Try to not allow duplicates of any careers so that everyone can learn about as many careers as possible.
The Career Fashion Show is the due date for the project. Tell students that they MUST wear their T-Shirt and take one walk down the “Red Carpet” in front of the class so that everyone can see the back and front of their shirt.
The directions for this give detail of what is expected. There is a student research page and the grading rubric is also included.
If you or your students can't get real t-shirts, don't fret! I have included printable t-shirts -- as 1-, 2-, 4-, and 6- page printables. Your students can use these to make paper t-shirt templates in various sizes.
Make a “Science Teacher” shirt to wear on Fashion Show day! You will get SUCH creative designs and this project really gets the students excited to learn about their chosen career and to try to make their T-shirt unique and beautiful. Hang a clothesline across the back corner of your classroom and hang some of the best shirts up for display! This makes a GREAT Back-to-School Night décor!
