Why This Track and Field Unit Plan?

With this guide, you will be provided with step-by-step and in-depth lesson plans to help you feel confident and ready to teach a three-week track and field unit.

Each lesson includes the general and specific standards that are completed each day. With more than 40 different learning activities, and detailed progressions, students will be engaged and ready to develop their fundamental movement skills through sport!

What's Included?

  • 15 Hour-long detailed, specific, and scaffolded lesson plans that are ready to go from printer to field. Each activity requires very little set-up and preparation, so students spend their time participating, not waiting. Lessons provided include:

  • Learning Activities: Each day includes several sport specific activities to keep the students engaged and motivated to develop their skills in a fun and high-paced environment. Detailed photos and/or diagrams accompany most activities to help you with setup and techniques
  • Key Teaching Points: Each learning activity includes a number of key teaching points to help you as a teacher improve students' form and technique. These key teaching points provide very explicit instructions on how all of the skills are performed correctly
  • Key Questions: Each day includes a variety of questions to determine students' understanding of why we perform skills a certain way and how the skills can be applied practically. Each debrief also provides specific questions to allow students to reflect on what they learned during the lesson
  • Safety Considerations: "It's all fun and games until someone gets hurt". The safety considerations provide specific areas that the students/teacher should be aware of to prevent injuries
  • Student Logs: The Indy 500 and track and field logs can be easily printed, so that students can keep track of their event attempts. The logs are also accessible through Easel, so students can track their progress digitally. These logs could be used throughout the unit to look back on their progress, or it could be used during a Track and Field day
  • Event Signs: These printable signs, with each event labelled, can be set up at each event making them perfect for a Track and Field day!
