Description

An Inquiry Based 7-9 week unit with detailed lesson plans for each class. Suitable for Grades 5-6. Students learn new games from different parts of the world, where they will first be introduced the basic skills of the sport, and then put their skills to use through game play. Also suitable for Inquiry based learning such as IB PYP PE - Where We Are In Place and Time Transdisciplinary Unit Standards Included.

All lessons are based on a 45-minute class allocation twice a week. Unit format is an exploration introduction (2 classes), then, each sport will take 2 classes each, one with an introduction to skills of the sport, and then game play for the second class. After 4 weeks (4 sports), the unit will conclude with mini-tournaments of each sport within the class (4 classes). Unit takes approximately 7-9 weeks to complete.

Building on the Grade 1-3 History of Games Unit, and the Grade 3-5 Evolution of Games Unit, the purpose of this unit is to introduce the origin of different sports that students may or may not be familiar with. At the end of the unit, students should know the basic skills needed to play the sport, know where the sport originated, play the sport with little guidance, and understand how the sport is recognized around the world today. They should physically and verbally be able to show understanding of the concepts and build on their knowledge throughout the unit.
