What educators are saying

My students found this graphic organizer very helpful in better understanding photosytnthesis, cellular respiration and how they are connected.
This was a great resource for reviewing and looking at the similarities and differences between photosynthesis and cellular respiration.
Also included in
  1. This bundle focuses on the cell processes of photosynthesis and cellular respiration and how create food and energy for the cell. There is a combination of hands on activities, digital interactive lessons, and review in the lesson sequence. These lessons focus on the role of photosynthesis and cel

Description

In this resource, students fill in a graphic organizer about photosynthesis and cellular respiration followed by a review worksheet. The graphic organizer can be filled in together as a class, have students use it for note taking while reading or during a lecture, or have students complete it as a quick check or assessment at the end of the unit

The graphic organizer is a jumping off point for students to add in the details of photosynthesis and cellular respiration. Students can add in additional details – for example they can see the products of the photosynthesis reaction become the reactants in cellular respiration (or vice versa). They can add in additional terms and ideas to personalize it for themselves. See the answer key for ideas to personalize it. I do not have students balance the photosynthesis and cellular respiration equations so the equations are not balanced.

The review worksheet starts with the equations for photosynthesis and cellular respiration and then has 6 fill in the blank questions and 7 questions where students identify if the description is focusing on photosynthesis or cellular respiration.

NGSSMS-LS1-7
Develop a model to describe how food is rearranged through chemical reactions forming new molecules that support growth and/or release energy as this matter moves through an organism. Emphasis is on describing that molecules are broken apart and put back together and that in this process, energy is released. Assessment does not include details of the chemical reactions for photosynthesis or respiration.
NGSSMS-LS1-6
Construct a scientific explanation based on evidence for the role of photosynthesis in the cycling of matter and flow of energy into and out of organisms. Emphasis is on tracing movement of matter and flow of energy. Assessment does not include the biochemical mechanisms of photosynthesis.
