What educators are saying

Students engage in so many of the Science & Engineering Practices during this activity! It is a great resource.

Description

Are you a middle school Science teacher using Next Generation Science Standards? Are you ready to challenge your students with tasks that show their learning?

In this activity, students will be using a computer simulation to model photosynthesis. Students will experiment digitally to determine which is the best claim:

  • Light intensity is the most important factor to plants producing oxygen.
  • Having the right color of light is the most important factor to plants producing oxygen.
  • Heating up the water is the most important factor to plants producing oxygen.

Students are prompted to use C-E-R (Claim-Evidence-Reasoning) statements.

Students will explore the equation for photosynthesis, collect, graph and analyze data, and make a conclusion based on their findings.

*You will need access to download the PhET software, which will automatically download by clicking on the link in the document.

NGSS Middle School Science Standard covered:

  • LS1-6 - Construct a scientific explanation based on evidence for the role of photosynthesis in the cycling of matter and flow of energy into and out of organisms.

This task is part of the Unit: Ecosystems found HERE.
