Description

Hello!

Throughout my first few years as a teacher, I have found it extremely helpful to assess my students at the beginning, middle and end of year in the area of phonics. While phonics is a foundational skill for reading and writing, it is not being included as needed in current curriculum.

As apart of guided reading, we engage in word work which is where this phonics assessment comes in handy. This simple tool will not only pinpoint phonetic areas in which students struggle but this assessment can be used to guide instructional starting points.

The phonics assessment follows the continuum of the skills as they should have been grasped from Kindergarten to third grade:

  • Vowel Sounds (Long and Short)
  • CVC Words
  • CVCE Words
  • Inflectional Endings
  • Digraphs
  • Blends
  • Letter- Sound Variations (Hard/Soft C&G)
  • Vowel Teams
  • Vowel Diphthongs
  • R-Controlled Vowels
  • Compound Words
  • Multisyllabic Words

I also included an assessment page for multisyllabic words that incorporate vowel teams, diphthongs and consonant -le words. Each phonetic area included 10 words to generate a score out of.

Hope this is a helpful tool in your classroom!
