Description

Phonemic Awareness Assessment and Decoding Inventory - Science of Reading Aligned

The easiest and most comprehensive phonemic awareness and decoding assessment you’ll ever use, with data that provides next teaching steps.

Find out what phonemic awareness, phonics, and decoding skills your students lack and have a complete blueprint to re-teach your students, so they become excellent decoders and fluent readers.

This inventory assesses student knowledge of isolated phonemes as well as the ability to decode phonemes within words.

All 44 Phonemes are tested, as well as additional common words (aka Rimes) and popular morphemes.

This assessment is not only useful for elementary teachers, and SPED teachers, but it is also great for intervention reading programs and response to intervention (RTI), as a tracking tool to see what skills students are learning and retaining over the year.

There are three places you can date the assessment for the beginning of the year, middle, and end, in order to show progress.

If you want to see a PREVIEW video of me using this tool with a student, you can view it here.

Areas assessed:

  • consonant sounds (K)
  • short (K) and long vowel sounds (1st)
  • schwa sounds (1st)
  • vowel pairs (1st)
  • consonant blends and clusters, both two & three letters (1st)
  • r controlled vowels (1st)
  • l controlled vowels (2nd)
  • diphthongs (2nd)
  • y as a vowel pretender (2nd)
  • irregular sounds made by ie (2nd)
  • silent letters (2nd)
  • rimes aka popular word family endings (1st-3rd)
  • common morphemes aka common affixes (4th/5th)

This assessment is correlated to a match developmentally appropriate teaching order for phonics taught or mastered in each grade level. It also covers a portion of the Common Core Foundational Reading Skills Standards for grades K-5.

The time to administer this assessment to individual students may vary from 5 minutes to 30 minutes. Depending on the child's skill and grade level, you would only test them on skills pertaining to the grade level completed. In addition, if a student fails two sections in a row, you would also stop the assessment.

For example, at the beginning of a school year, you would be checking for mastery of prior grade-level skills. Then at the end or middle of a school year, you would be checking for progress and mastery with current grade level expectations as outlined in this assessment.

P.S. You might also like my Phonics Posters that teach sound combinations, assessed here. Great for teaching and filling in gaps that appeared on this assessment.

Also, you check out this Science of Reading bundle that includes, this resource, the phonics posters, and two reading games where students can further apply and practice what they are learning.
