Description

Start off your Opinion/Persuasive Writing unit by ensuring your students know the vocabulary associated with this genre of writing. This is especially important if you have English Learners in your classroom!

This pack includes a graphic organizer to teach academic words that are key to understanding this genre. In addition there are 2 sets of vocabulary cards (one set with just the words and one set with just the definition and synonyms). You could use these as a matching game for students or you could laminate and use on a word wall.

The words included are: fact, opinion, persuade, supporting details, thesis, statement. There is also a blank graphic organizer for you to use for any subject or topic!

There are also 2 Opinion Writing Graphic Organizers to help students generate their own opinions before they begin writing!

Here is an example of how you could use these over 1 whole week!

Day 1 (45-60 min.) - Introduce/teach vocabulary
Day 2 (45-60 min.) - Start generating opinions about school problems
Day 3 (45-60 min.) - Start generating opinions about important people
Day 4 (45-60 min.) - Begin drafting - write thesis statements
Day 5/6 (45-60 min.) - Continue drafting - adding supporting details
