Resources included with this Persuasive Writing Unit:

    1. Persuasive Writing Lesson Plan, Graphic Organizer, and Student Examples

Are your students struggling to write a persuasive paragraph? This lesson plan provides an engaging introduction to persuasive writing using graphic organizers and examples of persuasive writing. Suitable for online learning and Google Classroom®!

This persuasive writing lesson begins with an inquiry-based slideshow for PowerPoint® or Google Slides®.  In this lesson, students will compare and contrast different styles of writing using real student examples in order to better understand the characteristics of persuasive writing.  They will also learn the "Golden Rules of Persuasive Writing" to use as a guideline for identifying and navigating this style of writing.

    2. Main Idea and Supporting Details Slideshow Lesson with Examples

This lesson explores examples of main ideas and supporting points using an interactive slideshow lesson and graphic organizer activity. Students will differentiate between main points and evidence to solidify their understanding and prepare for opinion writing.

Students will define the main ideas and supporting details by examining the characteristics of each component of opinion writing. They will then use these definitions to differentiate between examples of main points and evidence provided within the slideshow.

Students will then independently practice these skills using the Main Idea and Supporting Details Graphic Organizer provided.  This worksheet includes more examples of opinion writing that students must classify as either a "main idea" or "supporting evidence."

    3. Types of Evidence Slideshow Lesson and Anchor Chart

Students will define categories of supporting evidence and explore examples to solidify their understanding.  They will define different categories of supporting evidence by examining the characteristics of each type. Then, they can use these definitions to identify examples of supporting evidence provided within the slideshow.

Students will then consolidate the skills taught in the lesson using the Types of Supporting Details Word Wall Worksheets provided. These blank templates prompt students to define each type of supporting evidence and provide a unique example. These worksheets are provided in both colour & grayscale formats to suit your printing needs.

This word wall doubles as a classroom anchor chart: Once students complete this activity, you can display their work on your bulletin board.

    4. Persuasive Essay Outline - Writing Assignment and Graphic Organizer

This persuasive essay assignment includes assignment instructions, a graphic organizer, and an editable 4-level rubric to outline assignment expectations to students.  This assessment is suitable for online learning with digital materials for Google Drive®.

This persuasive essay outline can be used with upper middle school or junior high school students.  You can apply this outline to a persuasive essay on any topic.  The persuasive essay assignment instructions briefly outline the expectations of the assessment and provide space to note the due date of the final draft.

    5. Persuasive Writing Prompts - 20 Topics for Persuasive Essay or Paragraph

Practice persuasive writing with these 20 unique persuasive essay topics! These writing prompts can be used to practice persuasive paragraphs or essays and are appropriate for middle school and high school students. Suitable for online learning and Google Classroom®!

    6. Digital Persuasive Essay Outline - Graphic Organizer for Google Docs®

Scaffold persuasive writing with this digital essay outline! This graphic organizer will outline students’ 5-paragraph persuasive essay and prompt them to organize their introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion.   It also prompts students to include a topic sentence, supporting evidence, and other important parts of the body paragraph using the ICCER Outline.  Suitable for online learning and formatted for Google Drive®!

    7. Graphic Organizer for Research Essay - Digital Writing Template for Google Drive

Keep students motivated during the writing process using this digital graphic organizer for research writing. Use this template for research essays or persuasive writing.  Suitable for online learning and formatted for Google Docs®!

This graphic organizer will encourage students to adopt an objective approach to their research writing. They will be prompted to go beyond evaluating whether or not an author's opinion agrees with their own in order to consider perspectives outside of the one they plan to present in their essay.  This approach to research writing will strengthen their argument and their essay as a whole.

A great resource to use when schools are closed. Allows teachers to still teach the art of writing to persuade, even from a distance.
