Personalised Spelling and Vocabulary Programme: A Whole School Resource

This resource contains everything you need to address the spelling and vocabulary needs of children aged 4 – 12. It is fully differentiated and can be used by a whole school.

Easy to use and run, this programme will help each teacher in your school set a programme of spelling rules and patterns for each child to study and work through, based on the specific learning needs of each individual child.

Teachers love using this resource, it has a range of fun activities to do at home or school, tests for every age within the range 4 – 12, and user friendly lists of words for each spelling convention. The word lists and conventions are presented in a developmentally progressive order, meaning teachers can just run the programme without having to worry about what comes next. There are plenty of fun activities to do at school or home, which makes it easy to involve parents if you wish.

★Explanations about the spelling patterns in each level
★7 colour coded spelling tests to help set each child’s programme for the term or year – the tests can be used to check progress of the children at any time. The test also gives a sentence containing each word to help children put the words into context for ease of administration. There is one test per age group.
★7 sets of colour coded spelling cards, 55 cards in totalwhich the children use to select their weekly spellings. Each colour is aimed at a different age group. In my classroom, I have laminated each set of cards and I keep several sets in a central place so that children have easy access when they need to record their new spellings into their spelling books. I have children on different levels so I use several colours at the same time.
★The 7 sets of spelling cards contain 242 word lists, totalling over 3000 words over the 7 levels
★Differentiated printable activity sheets which may be photocopied to provide a scaffold for daily or weekly practise at home or at school, again, these are targeted and age appropriate; there are activities for every age group from age 4 - 12
★Activity sheets providing fun activities which can be used in school or for home learning – one for every age 4 - 12
★Extension lists to ensure vocabulary is developed
★Core lists containing suggested vocabulary at each level
★Irregular words and high frequency words identified and given focus at each level

Once the children have been assessed and their programme set, they are able to work mostly independently. In my classroom, I spend some time at the start of the academic year setting up the programme, and then the children are able to run it themselves. They enjoy being independent in their learning. I monitor their progress with the interim tests from time to time. The children using this approach and they usually make rapid progress.

The programme is fully differentiated ensuring authentic assessment for learning, and the meeting of each child's individual needs.
