What educators are saying

I like that there are 2 books for 2 levels here. I am using the stories and the cards for different ages and abilities.
Thank you for creating this resource. It has been helpful in our 4K room with a student who really struggles with the concept of personal space.

Description

Teaching personal space boundaries is an important part of social skills instruction. Personal space issues can interfere with both social and academic functioning. This best-selling packet includes tiered social stories and activities that will be a life-saver to you and your students! Children with autism, ADHD, mental health issues and other developmental challenges often have difficulties discerning social rules, such as personal space and nonverbal communication. Using engaging graphics where light and dark-skin tones are represented, you will get two teaching stories (pre-k to grade 2 and grades 3-4) to teach the concept of the "personal space bubble." I've also included tiered supporting activities to use to further your student's understanding of personal space rules.

Please note: You can use this product in these ways:

1. Print it out.

2. TPT's Digital EASEL: This product can be customized for your students and assigned to them in google classroom. The social narratives are all pre-recorded for you and the product is fully digitalized except for the visual reminders.

3. This product can also be used on your teletherapy platform with digital annotation.

Here is what is included in this packet;

  • A social story in color for pre-k to grades 2. This story not only teaches the concept of personal space but also includes how students should be using their language to interact with others instead of touching them, It presents personal space issues on the carpet, at a desk, and in lines. Some of the pages of the story can also be printed out, laminated and used as visual reminders to expected personal space behaviors. If you print these pages, you can pick and choose which ones are needed for your students as I did not number the pages.
  • A teaching story in color for grades 3-4. Real photographs of older students are used for this version and it is more text-heavy than the younger version.
  • A personal space sorting activity where students sort pictures of children respecting and invading the personal space of others. Includes two sorting mats, 24 smaller pictures, and instructions. For non-readers.
  • Eight perspective-taking activities in color that depict students invading the personal space of others on the carpet (use for rest time, carpet time or story time) in a line, standing, working in a group and at a desk. Have your student(s) tell what the child is saying in each picture. These activities are designed to improve perspective taking, ie "what are other students thinking about me when I am in their personal space?"
  • Three sets of tiered personal space worksheets. One tier requires drawing (for non-readers and non-writers) and the other tier requires both drawing and writing abilities. Black and white with 1 page of directions.
  • Personal space reminders and mini posters. Includes reminders for keeping hands and feet to self.
  • A mini-book-black and white. Send home!
  • 2 sets of personal space targets (color and B&W) for writers,
  • Other ideas and activities that you can use to help your students or clients respect the personal space of their peers.
