Description

This resource is designed to walk students step-by-step through the personal narrative essay writing process. It begins with a brainstorming activity and works as a funnel to narrow down students’ narrative ideas. Students will read an original narrative, “The Big Scare,” to understand the surface story and what the story is revealing about the author. Then, students will choose their topic considering what they want to reveal about themselves.

This process is great for college application essays and career building personal statements. The next steps will explain how to use detail and write with dialogue using original narrative examples to demonstrate the strategies. Once students write the essay, they will complete a self- and peer- assessment. An editable Common Core aligned rubric is included. Using this model will not only benefit students, but it will also make assessing much more streamlined for you as students will improve their writing during the process!
