Description

This hands-on activity can be used before or after learning about the periodic table of elements. Use this as an introduction to the periodic table and see how well students can group the elements. Or use this as an ending assessment for student to learn where the elements fall on the periodic table, and determine what elements might be missing.

This activity can be done with all the cards, or teacher can remove some for students to make predictions about missing elements.

It is designed for partner or small group work. It is a fun activity to get all students engaged and involved.

NGSSHS-PS1-1
Use the periodic table as a model to predict the relative properties of elements based on the patterns of electrons in the outermost energy level of atoms. Examples of properties that could be predicted from patterns could include reactivity of metals, types of bonds formed, numbers of bonds formed, and reactions with oxygen. Assessment is limited to main group elements. Assessment does not include quantitative understanding of ionization energy beyond relative trends.
