What educators are saying

Your escape rooms are one of my favorite resources for my class. We complete one after each unit and it is my students' favorite activity. I have purchased almost all of the 6th grade escapes and will be purchasing more. Thank you for such a fantastic, challenging, and fun resource.
Students struggled initially, but most were able to persevere and learn the concepts. Thanks for a great resource!

Description

Can your 6th graders convert percents to fractions or decimals, find a percentage of a number, and use fractions as rates to stop a hacker in this engaging digital escape room activity? Your sixth grade math class needs to use their knowledge of percents to stop a mathematical villain from hacking into the nation's largest bank. In this breakout style math activity, students use percents, rates, and ratios to stop the virus before it's too late!

In order to solve the five puzzles in this percent challenge, students must be able to:

  • Convert percents to fractions (and fractions to percents)
  • Convert percents to decimals (and decimals to percents)
  • Find a total when given a part and a percent CC.6.RP.A.3.c
  • Find a percent of a number (120% of 50)
  • Solve problems using fractions as a rate (45%= 45/100)
  • Solve basic substitution ciphers

This activity is self-checking and requires almost no prep! A Google Form™ (no e-mail or Google accounts are required) automates this digital escape room. As a correct answer is entered, students progress to the next puzzle. When students complete all of the puzzles, they will be given a new security clearance level that they write on their badge that acts as an exit ticket to show they have completed the task. This activity is low prep and encourages student engagement and cooperation! My students choose this type of game over worksheets 100% of the time! Please be sure your students have a way to access a Google Form before purchasing.

This online breakout can be used in class or for distance learning. Teachers can easily implement this in a virtual academy, homeschool parents can spice up math sheets with this worksheet alternative, and tutors love using digital breakouts to challenge students and get reluctant learners engaged.

Breakout activities are great for cooperative learning. Use this percent activity for your sixth graders for review or use as an enrichment activity for fifth graders.

FAQ

  • Do students need to have Gmail™ accounts? NO! Anyone with internet access and a tablet, computer, or even phone can complete the breakout.
  • How long will this take? That is the hardest question as the answer varies depending on each classroom, student, or group. Some students with a firm grasp on the concepts covered in this escape room will be able to complete the challenge very quickly (30 minutes), others will take longer. Allowing 45-60 minutes is recommended. The form will not save student data (unless students are logged into a Google™ account), so if you are worried about your students not finishing on time, simply have them write their answers on scratch paper. They can then come back and quickly re-enter their answers and pick up where they left off.
  • Will students have to search the web to figure out the puzzles? NO! All of the information needed will be provided in the Google Form™. The math in this activity is all standards-based.
