Peer Editing and Paragraph Writing for September 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th Grade

What is a P.E.P. Talk? P.E.P. talk stands for, “Peer Edited Paragraph Talk.” This is a time for students to do a quick paragraph write, and have a peer response. Students will write daily about different topics, and get immediate peer feedback. While students have a paragraph peer edited, they can discuss what they need to fix, listen to suggestions, and receive compliments about what they are doing well in their writing. Teachers can switch peer editors on a daily or weekly basis, so students can get feedback from all different students, who have varying writing styles and abilities. By helping each other, students can learn and improve from each other.

Are you ready to watch your students transform their writing? As you compare even the beginning of one month to the end of it, you’ll notice students staying on topic, using more interesting vocabulary, and writing with a purpose. Writing daily, with peer edits, helps students stay focused on their writing. With peer edits, students not only help their peers improve their writing skills, they too become better writers. Peer editing allows students to write for other people, other than their teacher, and challenges them to show their peers what they know. Allowing students to peer edit can also help build confidence. Students may feel safer with a peer giving them suggestions, because it is someone they trust and can relate to on a similar level.

Peer editing benefits the teacher too. Often, once a student has had a peer edit their writing, it comes to you in a much cleaner format. After practicing paragraphs daily, by the time essays come your way, students will be well practiced in the how their paragraphs and writing should be done.

The topics vary but focus on informative, opinion, and narrative writing styles. The Common Core State Standards focus on these writing styles. Peer editing is also part of the Common Core.
