Description
Why pattern task cards? Patterning is a skill that is important well beyond the primary years. Noticing numerical and shape patterns helps students continue to make sense of our place value system.
This set of differentiated patterning task cards is perfect to use as a practice opportunity in math centers or as an instructional tool when working with students needing extra practice in this area. Cards are made with an easy-to-read font and are available in color and black and white. Even perfect to share as a whole class as a warm up!
I love to project one card per day on my document camera to get us all warmed up. The cards are arranged in three sets—yellow, purple, and pink and get progressively more challenging as they progress. The first two sets are exclusively numeric patterns and the final set also includes shapes.
Being able to recognize, continue, and generate mathematical patterns is not only a part of most intermediate grade math series and curriculum sequences, but also forms a wonderful foundation for mathematical thinking. Being able to look deeply into patterns to project the 10th, 50th, or even 100th “term” shows a much deeper understanding than simply adding the next 3 terms to a pattern, so I have included cards with a number of different types of patterning “prompts” for students—from extending patterns to generating rules, to creating patterns that fit a rule. All cards also have a “How did you know?” component which can be used for oral or written explanations—a perfect opportunity to use math language and improve math “talk”.
Also included are several recording sheets as well as an answer key. ENJOY! NOTE: There are 36 different cards--12 of 3 different levels. The same cards are also included as low ink options. This is why this resource has as many pages as it does. Thanks!
