Description

6 fun parts of speech maze puzzles to review and practice identifying parts of speech. Grammar centers for English Language Arts lessons, or use as digital activities with Easel. Review identification of 8 word classes: nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, conjunctions, pronouns, prepositions, and interjections.

This no prep printable packet includes 6 parts of speech mazes, answer keys, recording sheet, extension challenge, and a parts of speech support page. Great as bell ringers, morning work, warm up activities, literacy centers, fast finisher challenges, assessment, meaningful fillers, homework tasks, and sub plans / lessons in upper elementary and middle school.

Many words can be more than one part of speech, depending on the context, therefore the words are presented within a sentence rather than on their own. A variety of sentence constructions provides challenge for older students.

Full answer keys included. PDF format.

Please see the detailed preview file to assess suitability for your students.

If you prefer to use them digitally instead of as printables, you can assign to your students whichever pages of this resource you want, using Easel. You can add your own instructions if you wish and take out any pages you don't wish your students to see, such as answer keys. Students can then complete the mazes on their device, using the pen tool.

MORE INFO ABOUT THIS PACKET:

  • Flexible maze worksheets with no prep required – just print (or display on a password-protected online platform for your students). Students work out what part of speech the words in bold are (using the context of the sentences), and then use the answers to find the correct pathway through the maze. The correct pathway does not pass through all boxes.

  • Great to use when focusing on parts of speech but are also ideal for year-round use in literacy centers, and can be used as morning work, warm up activities, early finisher challenges, assessment, meaningful fillers, homework tasks, sub lessons etc.

  • You might want to laminate to use again, with students using a dry-wipe marker instead of a pencil or highlighter etc. A recording sheet is included if you wish students to note down the words they encounter.

  • Differentiation: the parts of speech support page can be provided to students who require it.

  • Extension challenge: Students could make their own parts of speech maze for a partner to complete. A simpler blank template is included with space for children to write sentences with a word underlined or highlighted. They can then write the parts of speech in the pathways. Students should be urged to prepare their correct pathway before filling in blank pathways with incorrect answers and any blank boxes with sentences.

  • Mazes work well for individuals, pairs, or small groups (mixed ability for differentiation is an option). Students enjoy pooling their knowledge. You might want to enlarge mazes for use by larger groups. It might suit you and your students to make it competitive. Which group can finish first?

  • If playing in groups, you might want to allocate the help cards.

  • Answer keys are included in both maze and recording sheet formats. You could print an answer key so you can quickly find students who have gone wrong and nudge them back on course! Students can retrace their steps to see where they have strayed from the correct path. You could display the answer key on the whiteboard at the end for self-checking.
