What educators are saying

I love using this resource. It is a little hard to cut out the shapes, but it is a great representation of Pangea. Thank you for creating it.

Learning Objective

The students will then look at the fossil evidence and try to match up the ancient landmass pieces to see if they can form the supercontinent, Pangea.

Description

Pangea and continental drift are so fun to learn about! Earth's surface has changed over time. Students will use fossil evidence to examine changes to Earth's surface. Students will learn about the theory of Pangea and Continental Drift. Students will enjoy this hands-on, research-based project to get students thinking about fossil records and how they help to show geologic changes over time.

This unit includes:

  • slide show
  • QR code research
  • printable puzzle activity
  • response pages
  • lesson plans
  • interactive notebook flaps

Teachers Love this Resource!

Jennifer ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ Extremely Satisfied

Aligns well with the standards. Great labs and follow-up pages. Great slide show. Altogether a really great unit that is easy to implement. My students loved the puzzle activity.

Connie ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ Extremely Satisfied

I bought this as a nice little supplement for my usual stuff, but this is really well-planned and carefully aligned to address the standards. Love this.

See the preview for more details!

They will collect evidence from the presentation and their research using QR codes or URLs. The students will then look at the fossil evidence and try to match up the ancient landmass pieces to see if they can form the supercontinent Pangea. This activity with fossil evidence is engaging! All you have to do is print it out and follow the directions.

This resource is designed to meet the NGSS Disciplinary Core Ideas: History of The Planet Earth, Plate Tectonics and Large-Scale System Interactions, and Earth's Materials and Systems.

This resource is designed to meet the standard for NGSS Earths Systems:

MS-ESS2-2. Construct an explanation based on evidence for how geoscience processes have changed Earth’s surface at varying time and spatial scales.

MS-ESS2-3.

Analyze and interpret data on the distribution of fossils and rocks, continental shapes, and seafloor structures to provide evidence of the past plate motions

Utah SEEd

Standard 7.2.5

Ask questions and analyze and interpret data about the patterns between plate tectonics and:

(1) The occurrence of earthquakes and volcanoes.

(2) Continental and ocean floor features.

(3) The distribution of rocks and fossils.

Utah SEEd

Standard 7.2.2 Construct an explanation based on evidence for how processes have changed Earth’s surface at varying time and spatial scales. Examples of processes at varying time scales could include slow plate motions or rapid landslides. Examples of processes at varying spatial scales could consist of the uplift of a mountain range or the deposition of fine sediments.

Science Concepts Include:

Plate Tectonics

Fossil Evidence

Seafloor Spreading

Geoscience Processes

Changes to Earth's Surfaces

Past Plate Motions

Standards

NGSSMS-ESS2-3
Analyze and interpret data on the distribution of fossils and rocks, continental shapes, and seafloor structures to provide evidence of the past plate motions. Examples of data include similarities of rock and fossil types on different continents, the shapes of the continents (including continental shelves), and the locations of ocean structures (such as ridges, fracture zones, and trenches). Paleomagnetic anomalies in oceanic and continental crust are not assessed.
NGSSMS-ESS2-2
Construct an explanation based on evidence for how geoscience processes have changed Earth’s surface at varying time and spatial scales. Emphasis is on how processes change Earth’s surface at time and spatial scales that can be large (such as slow plate motions or the uplift of large mountain ranges) or small (such as rapid landslides or microscopic geochemical reactions), and how many geoscience processes (such as earthquakes, volcanoes, and meteor impacts) usually behave gradually but are punctuated by catastrophic events. Examples of geoscience processes include surface weathering and deposition by the movements of water, ice, and wind. Emphasis is on geoscience processes that shape local geographic features, where appropriate.
