Pacing Guides for Foundations of Algebra & Algebra I (Vocab & I CAN statements)

This zip folder contains 2 main documents, 90 Day Planner - At A Glance and Pacing Guide, that are aligned with the Common Core State Standards for Math I. These products are provided both as PDF files and Word documents so it is fully editable to fit you and your students' needs.

90 Day Planner – At a Glance
At the beginning of the pacing guide is the “90 Day Planner – At A Glance”. The purpose of this document is for teachers to quickly be able to see the progression of the units, daily topics, and assignments.

Pacing Guide
The pacing guide is just what it says like…a guide. The pacing guide is ambitious and it is written as if all students come to you, and us, adequately prepared and ready to learn. In the real world, this is often not true. We modify this guide as necessary with each class that we teach based upon student needs. Again, this is just a guide. Please do not sacrifice student needs to stay exactly where the guide says you should be. 

The pacing guide includes weekly vocabulary, standards covered both daily and weekly, formulas needed for the week, and daily “I can” statements for Foundations of Math/Algebra and Math I/Algebra. There are a lot of “I can” statements to choose from each day. You won’t use all of them every day. Please choose, based on student needs, the one(s) that you want to use each day. 

Foundations of Math/Math 1
In both the pacing guide and the 90 day planner, Foundations and Math 1 are both referenced. These are referenced because some districts have year-long 90 minute blocks of Math 1. We consider the first half of the year Foundations and the second half of the year Math 1. Also, Foundational level and Math 1 level can be used for differentiation of material. The Foundational level material is a bit easier than the Math 1 level and as a result the Math 1 "I can" statements progress faster and in more depth than Foundations.

Abbreviations/Assignments Listed on the Pacing Guide:
There are abbreviations on the pacing guide that need to be explained:

The “House Project” : Referenced on Day 1, the house project will be available for purchase by August 20, 2015. The “House Project” is a semester long activity where students answer different questions about a drawing of the interior of a house as well as the land and improvements that are with the house. The questions are representative of the curriculum as a whole and should be viewed as summative. The types of questions that will be asked include: linear programming, appropriate domain and range, unit conversions, operating with polynomials, proving equivalency, solving quadratic equations, line of best fit, statistics, etc. Differentiated versions will be available to address different levels of student needs.

Quizzes: Our quizzes are cumulative and are designed for students to have to think. Quizzes and detailed solutions are included with this bundle and an explanation/suggestions for use are included with the quizzes.

AQP stands for After Quiz Practice: We create practice for students to work on after they finish their quiz. Let’s face it, all students don’t work at the same pace. This makes use of time that may be lost while waiting on others to finish. The AQP should be designed based on individual class review needs. AQP’s tend to be easier than quizzes – more in line with traditional classwork in order to practice basic skills and entry level applications. Providing After Quiz Practices also allows you, the teacher, to have a few moments to grade the quizzes and return them to the students for immediate feedback. After Quiz Practices will be for purchase available in early September, 2015.

Hmwk Wkly Study Guide: Homework – Weekly Study Guide is a homework assignment we give students each Tuesday that is due on Friday of the same week. We typically have students turn in the study guide with their tests. The study guide is based on student misconceptions from the prior week’s cumulative test. Study guides with tests will be available for purchase by August 20, 2015.

Tests: Cumulative tests are given weekly, generally on Fridays. Any material learned up to this point could be included on our tests. Tests are cumulative because this reinforces to students that math is not something that should be put in their short term memory. They will be responsible for the material throughout the semester and beyond. Tests will be available for sell by August 20, 2015.
