Description

SCIENCE PROJECT: FORCES & MOTION IN SPORTS

SUBJECTS: SCIENCE, PHYSICAL EDUCATION, PHYSICAL SCIENCE, PHYSICS

GRADES : 7-12

SUB PLANS: YES!

This folder contains several assignments focusing on Newton's Laws of Motion, energy, and the types of friction. The work is perfect for a conclusion on a motion unit (or as a refresher). Several options are included to enhance for high school students and general science / physics classes.

PROJECT GOAL - To introduce students to Newton's Laws of Motion and the three forms of friction and incorporate these themes into sports.

1 - Project Example Presentation (10 slides) showing how the sport of rock climbing is connected to the Laws of Motion, energy, and friction. This power point is used to get students thinking about all other sports and how they connect to the theme of motion and energy. Terms covered: 1st Law of Motion, 2nd Law of Motion, 3rd Law of Motion, Kinetic Energy, Potential Energy, Speed, Sliding Friction, Rolling Friction, and Fluid Friction. (a link to a Google Slides example is also provided)

2 - Power Point/Prezi/Google Slideshow Rubric for students to design their own 10-slide presentation connecting a sport of their choice to the same motion/energy themes presented in the rock climbing example. (2 versions Basic Terms and Advanced Terms)

3 - Article #1: Newton's Laws of Motion & Sports - a 2-page article that shows connections to sports and the laws of motion. Great to read prior to students starting their projects. A questions sheet and vocabulary puzzle are also included. A picture sheet of various sports is included and students are tasked with identifying specific laws of motion examples in each sport.

4 - Article #2: Rock Climbing in Science - a 2-page article that shows connections to the sport and forces and motion. Great to read prior to students starting their projects. 1-page question sheet with wordsearch is provided.

5 - Webquest #1- an Internet vocabulary assignment that has students looking for examples of the three laws of motion and the three forms of friction.

6 - Webquest #2 - an internet definition assignment that has students finding definitions for advanced terms to include with their project.

7 - Picture Identification - a 12 picture example worksheet asking students to connect what is being shown in each picture to a law of motion and a form of friction. (great for classroom sharing because each picture has more than one explanation)

8 - Puzzle Sheet - a cryptogram puzzle with a message on the laws of motion and some sports connections to write about (great for homework).

The Power Point / Prezi / Google Slideshow Project is the main focus of the packet and this is one that all students love because they can choose any sport/activity and connect aspects of it to the laws of motion. I have seen everything from golf, polo, and wrestling, to surfing, synchronized swimming, and paragliding. Students love making these projects and sharing them with the class.

DOC & PDF VERSIONS: This worksheet is provided as an MS-Word document (DOC) so you can edit any questions/content to better fit the needs of your students. A PDF version is also provided for ease of use/printing on any technology.
