Description

This item/file contains ONE 8" x 10" image. Other files are also for sale, including a master file of all posters for a MUCH reduced price.

The sample/preview offered is for the "ANALYZE" poster. All other posters are similar in design and format.

These posters are designed to help teachers to demonstrate thinking skills within the Common Core. In fact, they were adapted from the book How to Teach Thinking Skills Within the Common Core by James A. Bellanca, Robin J. Fogarty, and Brian M. Pete. I contacted the publisher who did not have issue with me preparing these posters for teachers’ use.

The premise of the book is that the CCSS require 21 thinking skills, perhaps beyond what previous standards-based instruction demanded from our students. The authors also feel that students need to be TAUGHT and PRACTICE how to do this type of thinking. They have developed “Talk Through” (an explicit teaching lesson), “Walk Through” (a classroom content lesson), and “Drive Through” (a CCSS performance task lesson) plans to help teachers do a thorough job of preparing our students for these thinking processes. To me, we can also refer to these lessons as the “I do it,” “We do it,” “You do it” method of gradual release associated with guided practice.

My principal purchased the book for our staff and each grade level has chosen three skills that we will focus on this coming year. We determined our focus skills by listing the verbs that were most commonly used in our Common Core State Standards. My team chose DETERMINE, EXPLAIN, and DEVELOP.

The other skills outlined in the book are: ANALYZE, EVALUATE, PROBLEM SOLVE, GENERATE, ASSOCIATE, HYPOTHESIZE, CLARIFY, INTERPRET, UNDERSTAND, INFER, COMPARE & CONTRAST, DECIDE, REASON, CONNECT, REPRESENT, SYNTHESIZE, GENERALIZE, and APPLY.

Each thinking skill has an acronym to help students remember the steps.I have created reminder cards (5” x 7”) for the “Walk Through…” etc. lesson steps as well as 8” x 10” posters for the acronyms for each of the thinking skills (ONE of these is included in this file). They are designed to print as these photo sizes at 300 dpi. They may be able to be resized to fit your needs, but I cannot guarantee this.

To fully understand the usage and implementation of the lessons, I recommend purchasing How to Teach Thinking Skills Within the Common Core. Its ISBN number is 978-1-936-764-07-5. It also has reproducible activity sheets to use with the lessons. As of today (07/13/2013), it is for sale on amazon.com for $22.38.

Thank you for your purchase! If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
